Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Cancer

Jan 29, 2025 | Wales Stories

Dr Jo Soldan is a Clinical Psychologist and internationally trained mindfulness teacher based in Maggie’s Cancer Centre, Cardiff. Here she offers Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Cancer, both for people living with a cancer diagnosis and for their relatives.

People attending Maggie’s Cardiff have the opportunity to sign up to join an eight-week Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Cancer course along with a day retreat. These courses are offered quarterly.  After the course there is ongoing support to help maintain their practice, including monthly practice sessions and quarterly day retreats. This helps to build a supportive community of people living mindfully with a cancer diagnosis.

Each group is evaluated. People that participated in the Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy course have all benefited.100% of participants stated that mindfulness course was helpful and agreed they felt better equipped to manage when things are difficult or go wrong. Their feedback demonstrates the benefits of mindfulness in living with cancer:

“I am definitely more self-aware and calmer, less striving and more accepting”

“It’s made me more calm and happier living alongside my cancer”

“An excellent course. I feel much better equipped for difficult situations where I am tense and mentally stuck”

“It has made an incredible difference. I felt I have learnt so much about myself. I am more in control, less reactive and understand better how my feelings and emotions work”

As a healthcare professional, Jo has found her personal mindfulness practice to be very supportive of her professional life.  Her hopes for the future include growing the community to expand and include NHS healthcare staff.
